 In 1791, Samuel
Staples put Easton on the map when he established the first free secondary school in
Connecticut, one of the first in the country. Although the school was intended for the
poor, its excellent reputation attracted the wealthy who paid $4 per year tuition to
attend classes. Today, Easton residents enjoy the privacy of rural living with all the
conveniences such neighboring towns as Fairfield Weston and Redding. The New England
countryside is sprinkled with new and older homes among wooded hills and open meadows. The
town is abundant in recreational facilities and activities for both the winter and the
